Event Description

Lac La Belle
Evocative of bygone eras and hollowed traditions, the music of Lac La Belle fits comfortably next to old-timey Americana, but blazes its own trail away from the purist camp. Formed in 2008 as Jennie and the Sure Shots, the group began as an expansion of the set of country, honky-tonk and cowboy tunes that singer Jennie Knaggs had been performing around Detroit. Nick Schillace and Joel Peterson are enthusiasts of the early decades of recorded music who had distinguished themselves in the creative music scene there. They saw the potential for a new group that could absorb and transmute the vocabulary of early Americana. Schillace and Peterson learned Knaggs’ expansive repertoire and then the trio went to work hammering out its own identity. The name change to Lac La Belle signaled the new direction and the group consolidated energy into songwriting and several tours. Lac La Belle released its first eponymous recording in October 2009, during its second tour of the year. Recorded by Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, The Dirt Bombs etc), the entire record was cut live in the studio, using only a few mics. Its spare production captures the timeless quality of Lac La Belle’s sound, without being nostalgic.

Eric Carbonara (w/ Jessie Sparhawk)
Eric Carbonara is a Philadelphia based guitarist, whose search for raw aural expression has led him far and wide – from noise & electro-acoustic music to taking deep root in the bounty of the wooden guitar.

KBD
"This is improvisation that favors subtlety, minimalism (for the most part), and the extensive use of space along with creeping dynamic shifts." KBD is an improvisational cooperative from Toledo, Ohio. Founded in 2006, its principal agents are Gabe Beam and Michael Kimaid, along with occasional collaborators Colin Helb (based in Philadelphia) and Ryan Dohm (based in Los Angeles). With the full-length release [four plus one] on the Eh? music label, KBD has received positive critical reviews in North America and Europe, and garnered significant airplay on college radio and internet playlists. Predominantly an improvisational group, KBD performed a graphic score entitled "41.3854N 82.3207W" at the Artomatic 419 festival in 2007, and collaborated with filmmaker Angel Vasquez for the short film "Paragee" in 2008. In addition to the full-length label release, KBD has taken to the 3" format to release limited edition recordings for purchase at their live shows, including "No Instruments," a live, object-only recording from 2007 and "Milwaukee Field Recording" from 2009. A full-length digital download, entitled "Two Face" is also available for free on archive.org.

Josh Carrigan
Josh Carrigan is a multi-instrumentalist, tape player, and composer living in Philadelphia. His output channels elements of musique concrete, cheap electronics, indoor voices, percussion ensemble, granular sweetjazz, drone maps, backwoods radiophonies, open envelopes, and ethnic pop classics from Seoul to Memphis into vivid statements of long tones, polyrhythm, and off-kilter vibrations.
