STRAPPING FIELDHANDS
What?! Really?! The Strapping Fieldhands were born in the basements and bedrooms of Philadelphia over ten years ago when they began taping their loose jam sessions on home recording equipment, with no other goal than to play around with some sounds among friends and just tape some weird crap to amuse themselves. Bob Malloy had some songs, Bob Dickie had a home studio, Jacy Webster had to be there. A band was begun. Their earliest efforts became the first Strapping Fieldhands 7" single that was originally meant to be a one-off on Siltbreeze, but the immediate interest generated sparked a series of vinyl singles now collected on the CD Gobs on the Midway. Their first ever live gig was in Fishtown!!!
D CHARLES SPEER
Singer-guitarist Dave Shuford possesses a deep, woodsy baritone and the confident intonation of a master storyteller. In a world populated by meh-rate bar bands, Shuford and his crack quartet are our best saloon band. Members of No Neck Blues Band.
MEGAJAM BOOZE BAND
What started as a one-off joke has become a serious blues/booze force in Philadelphia's local weirdo scene. Members of Birds of Maya, Watery Love, Boogie Witch, Kurt Vile & the Violators, and too many more to mention here. It's kind of absurd.

ROME - Experts are examining whether a painting belonging to the Catholic priestly order of the Jesuits in Rome is the work of Italian master Caravaggio, the Vatican newspaper said Saturday. The L'Osservatore Romano article appeared as several Rome churches and museums housing works by Caravaggio planned to extend opening hours in an "all-nighter" to mark the 400th anniversary of his death. From dusk on Saturday until Sunday morning, visitors can enter for free Rome's Borghese Gallery, which houses such masterpieces as David with the head of Goliath and Boy with a basket of fruit. Also open will be three central Rome churches - Santa Maria del Popolo, Sant'Agostino and San Luigi dei Francesi - which house some half-dozen Caravaggio paintings, including the Crucifixion of St. Peter in Santa Maria del Popolo.
